ADA gallery is pleased to announce new collaborative works by installation artist Rachel Hayes and painter Jiha Moon. Jiha's gestural marks and seductive imagery are painted on, and embedded in, Rachel's sculptural panels that are sewn from fabric and Korean mulberry paper. Rachel's use of shiny swatches of colorful fabric contrast nicely with Jiha's soft fuzzy brush strokes as they attempt to tame the wild beast they envision their collaboration to be. Yasu means "Beast" in Korean, therefore "Our Yasu" is a tribute to their team effort.

With separate studios in Kansas City, Brooklyn, and Atlanta, there is a great deal of negotiation and compromise necessary as they construct and deconstruct work before meeting face to face onsite to create their installations. Hayes and Moon have been working together since meeting in 2007 at the Art Omi residency in New York. Their first collaborative effort, "Outflow" was featured in the group exhibition "More Mergers & Acquisitions" curated by Stuart Horodner at The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, 2009. They followed this with a large work entitled "Chutes and Tears" at The Lab Gallery in New York last April, a grand landscape of fabric and paint which unfolded and revealed itself as one walked past the corner window gallery. This work featured the use of recycled blue jeans, which were collected, shredded, often bleached, and reassembled into curtain-like forms creating cascades and shelters. For their exhibition at ADA gallery, the team will site specifically re-install "Chutes and Tears".

Jiha has finished her recent project with The Fabric workshop and Museum and was in four person show at The Fabric workshop and museum in Philladelphia this past spring 2011. Rachel had her fellowship exhibition at Saint-Gaudens national historic site in Cornish, NH in 201o and is getting ready for her one year residency at Mary Walsh Sharpe foundtion in Brooklyn this September, 2011.

This is Jiha and Rachel's third collaborative exhibition and debut exhibition at ADA gallery as a team.

The Ideal of this exhibition came from the lingering thoughts of flower paintings presented at a retrospective of Giorgio Morandi (1890~1964, Italian) who has been considered as a master of 20th century still-life painter, at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art back in 2008. For this exhibition, fourteen local and international artists have individually interpreted ‘the Essence of Art' as a common theme revolving around Morandi's works and life. The beauty of a retrospective comes by encountering the strong aura of existence from the artist's entire life through his artifacts in a confined space. The retrospective of Giorgio Morandi at Metropolitan Art Museum was certainly one of the most memorable exhibitions because of two distinctive reasons. First, the letters he sent to his friends were displayed in frames side by side with his art works, and they prove the artist's private life and his spirit completely stayed in his art. Morandi transformed the daily life from ordinary to metaphysical level through subtle and delicate composition of objects as well as simple but sophisticated arrangement of palette on small canvas. While walking through the aisle where his works were displayed, I started to realize the reason why Morandi could be able to persist with his subject matter. What he was focused on was not the subject matter that was on the canvas, rather it was far more beyond the canvas. Therefore he doesn't seem to need making the visual variation. As a result, what we see from his art, at first, look all the same, but the subtleness of his works vibrates as the time passed by. I thought what he picked as the subject matter; the complexion of what he was searching through making the paintings. What I got was strong impression of his life which completely dedicated to his art as a specimen of all the artists who are searching as he was. This makes the phenomenon of synchronizing the art and the artist himself is something that we all have to think about. The second reason comes from many of Morandi's flower paintings titled ‘Fiori' (all the flower paintings titled the same.) Since they are mostly owned by private collectors- most of them remain anonymous while lending their paintings to the MET- it was very rare to see them in one place. The fact that those flower paintings were only created to give out as presents, according to the descriptions and letters he wrote, the eccentric feeling from the beauty of ‘Fiori' lingered long in my memory.

The reasons listed above led me to propose ‘flowers' as the main visual theme of the exhibition. The flowers in Morandi's paintings are artificial flowers that are still preserved and displayed at Morandi Art Museum in Bologna, along with other objects that he used in his still life paintings. Therefore, his flowers in the paintings are also the one of his still life objects that he used for the paintings. This satisfies the hypothesis that the visual theme is flowers and not necessarily flowers at the same time, and it enables to nullify the symbolism of giving and receiving an object or an image of flowers. Then why are Morandi's flowers in the paintings more subtle and elegant than the real flowers? Do the images that are perceived by our eyes reflect the afterimage of our experience? Or, do we implicitly distinguish them as the flowers that would never wilt? Morandi, who once said “ There is nothing more surreal and abstract than reality itself ,” might have thought so. Maybe he wanted to accomplish something that transcends human cognition through our visual system by painting the same subject over and over. This would be the reason why his works, whose essence remains without flesh, are still loved by and inspire many artists all over the world. I'd like to share the experience of a precious opportunity to appreciate Morandi's art world, that deletes the concept of time and imbues the air of contemplation in our spirits, as well as to ponder on the “essence or art”.

Sculptor Rachel Hayes and painter Jiha Moon have been collaborating since 2007 when they met at Art Omi International Artists Residency.

Kansas City artist Rachel Hayes’s main interest is in constructing and altering space with layered colors, texture from various fabric and synthetic vinyl by sewing them together. Hayes often builds the large composed sewn panels as an installation that can be viewed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Viewers can experience color, space, material, light and shadow in a transformed setting.

Jiha Moon is an Atlanta-based painter whose gestural paintings explore fluid identities and the global movement of people and their cultures. Moon is taking cues from everyday life, mixing and twisting to make new iconographies that are in between familiar and unfamiliar zones. Moon’s bold, layered and detailed landscapes on Korean mulberry paper appear light hearted and spontaneous.

There are many dualities within the collaboration of Moon and Hayes. There is balance found in the graphic structures, sewn grids, gestural mark-making and fluid forms. Hayes and Moon together combine and embrace their opposite elements in their collaborative installations. Moon’s bold and delicate brushstrokes are painted and embedded within Rachel's sculptural panels sewn out of fabrics and Korean mulberry paper.

They go back and forth with each other’s work to make alterations and suggest possible images. There is much negotiation and deconstruction of the fabric paintings in their separate studios in Kansas City and Atlanta. The second part of collaboration is at the actual site, as they build and install these panels in the new space. Their first collaborated effort, “Outflow” was seen at The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta Georgia (December 2008 – January 2009) as part of a group exhibition, “More Mergers & Acquisitions” curated by Stuart Horodner.

Hayes and Moon have been awarded their second exhibition opportunity at The Lab Gallery in New York. The work entitled “Chutes and Tears” is a landscape which will unfold and reveal itself as one walks past the windows of the Lab Gallery in April 2011. They are working on adding the new element of used denim blue jeans to this installation, to create and evoke waterfalls in the space. They are in the middle of collecting and shredding many shades and different hues of used jeans which will connect to the painting’s fabric panel. They want to bring unexpected, surprising material to their collaborative work.

Borderland Abstraction includes several generations of artists working throughout the United States who are invested in the expanded possibilities and problems of abstraction. Their work, in painting, sculpture, photography and video, often attaches to other disciplines - music, architecture, film, urbanism, virtual space - with a fervor that swells the limits of abstraction.

Debate on abstraction ballooned in the last decade, engulfing issues as varied as the politics of beauty, material ingenuity, site-specificity and fragmentation. Response to these issues splintered into strongly worded arguments on the cause of visual pleasure v. market pressure; iteration v. spontaneity, the offhand gesture v. formal purity; reductivist aesthetics v. maximalist expression; and on and on. Rather than wallow in these debates, which ultimately shift focus from the work and its ideas, this exhibition explores the vibrant cracks in between, places where there are authentic pleasures in the making, looking and thinking about contemporary abstraction.

Nils Folke Anderson will be building work at the Bemis Center from January 19 to January 22. Please join Bemis Center Curator Hesse McGraw and Anderson, Matthew Kluber, Colin C. Smith and Wendy White for a discussion about the exhibition and their works on Saturday, January 23 from noon to 2:00 p.m.

More Mergers & Acquisitions is a continuation of our popular and provocative exhibition Mergers & Acquisitions (December 12, 2008 – January 25, 2009), that brought together works by renowned modern masters and consequential contemporary artists. Once again, distinctive works in various media have been borrowed from local, regional, and national artists, collections, galleries, and studios; combined they create surprising affinities of form, content, and historical legacy. The exhibition is organized into four themes: Figure-Ground, Collaboration, Un-Natural, and Familiar Faces. Throughout the exhibition, found photographs contribute to each thematic grouping.

Figure-Ground is an organizational concept that helps to locate specific forms in represented or real space. Works by painters Sam Gilliam, Ron Gorchov, and Frank Stella clarify or confuse elements of figure and ground by redefining the possibilities of the shaped canvas and how it can contain color and gesture. Brad Tucker and Richard Wentworth are sculptors who manipulate common materials (wooden lattice, metal buckets) to create humorously metaphysical objects and installations.

Jiha Moon and Rachel Hayes, Golden Blizzard (an Atlanta-based collective), and Team SHaG (New York painters Amy Sillman, David Humphrey, and Elliott Green), all choose to take on the joys and pitfalls of Collaboration. Each artist possesses a diverse and inclusive practice, so their collective activities cultivate an even wider range of illustrative techniques and image-making traditions including collage, figuration, landscape, surrealism, fantasy, and kitsch.

The theme of Un-Natural brings together works by Steve Aishman, Joe Gibbons, Joe Peragine, and Scott Reeder, who examine aspects of abundance, violence, estrangement, and sadness. Their works present various flowers, plants, and gardens as the recipients of human activity or as sentient beings capable of their own expressive powers.

Familiar Faces are seen in a variety of funny or disturbing head shots including Osama Bin Laden, Farrah Fawcett, the Man in the Moon, and artist self portraits. Works by Heidi Aishman, Leah Busch, Arnulf Rainer, Curtis Mitchell, Joel-Peter Witkin, and William Wegman use these subjects in combination with precise materials to examine the complexities of identity and popular culture.

More Mergers & Acquisitions acknowledges current states of personal, economic, and institutional uncertainty while positing an optimistic tone of generosity and camaraderie.

Rachel Hayes installation Ice Cold Day Dream envelopes the front Gallery at Dolphin. A single 30' X 30’ drape of sewn fabric and vinyl hangs weightlessly acting as catch-all for the dense and weighted form that seems to rest in its embrace. Created is an experimental landscape with color, line and light, layered to create a depth of new and ambiguous images.

Two Public Art Projects Announced-- Rachel Hayes and Nina Bovasso Kickoff Re:Construction 2009

BravinLee Programsis pleased to have been selected as consultants to the Downtown Alliance for their Re: Construction program. This initiative channels the energy of Downtown's rebuilding process by recasting construction sites as canvasses for innovative public art and architecture. Each project uses standard construction barriers for artistic installations, embracing the ongoing nature of Downtown's redevelopment. The program will run for three years, and is funded through a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is funded through Community Development Block Grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This summer BravinLee programs will present Rachel Hayes and Nina Bovasso on two different construction sites in Lower Manhattan.

In mid August, Rachel Hayes will install Rainbow Conversation at the Louise Nevelson Plaza construction site, part the of New York City Department of Design and Construction's Liberty Street reconstruction project, located at the corner of William Street and Maiden Lane. In Rainbow Conversation, Sculptor Rachel Hayes creates spectacular experiences of color and motion in an area that might otherwise be overlooked or avoided. Strips of opaque and sheer fabrics and vinyl have been sewed into striped panels. These materials are not only objects with boundless properties for manipulation, but also historical signifiers of gender, fashion, decoration and gesture. Hayes' installation will transform the 41 aluminum fences that surround the construction zone into a sensual and vibrant experience, building experimental multihued landscapes with line and light. Some of the pieces will flutter in the wind so that one will see both movement and color from either end of the Plaza, beckoning the viewer to move around it. Hayes is interested in the deep conversation going on behind the fence, consisting of mostly grueling and heavy activity, engineered with giant machines. Rainbow Conversation has been just as carefully engineered as the construction going on behind it: Each piece was meticulously hand-sewn, and incorporates not only Hayes' own physical labor, but also that of family and friends, including both her mother and mother-in-law. According to Hayes, "It is almost as if my work doesn't care what is going on behind it, yet I am responding to the construction site, offering sheer windows to peep through and witness the hard work of others. It is quite interesting that all this construction surrounds Louise Nevelson's 'Shadows and Flags', 1978, a powerful sculpture by an important woman artist. It is almost cyclical."

Rachel Hayes hails from Kansas City and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has had solo exhibitions at Shaw Center for the Arts, Baton Rouge, Solvent Space, Richmond, VA, LAB Gallery, NY and Roswell Museum and Art Center, Roswell, NM. Group exhibitions include the Sculpture Center, NY, Kansas City Jewish Museum, Grand Arts, Kansas City, and Fakespace LA. Awards and Residencies include Sculpture Space Residency, Art Omi International Residency, Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship in Sculpture. Most recently she was awarded the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Memorial Fellowship in Sculpture and will have a solo show 2010 in Cornish, NH.

We rush around our environment every day, driving to work, running errands, and trying to manage our lives. The concrete buildings and wire fences of our cityscape barely register; we are so used to the sights of the city. What if something wonderful is waiting out there amidst the construction and dust? What if someone can find something new in our forgotten and discarded remnants? This is what sculptor and fiber artist Rachel Hayes does. She uses innocuous and readily available media such as fabric to create spectacular experiences of color and motion in an otherwise unappreciated setting. She has successfully turned narrow hallways, city walk ways and grassy hills into vital and vibrant art installations which cause the viewer to step back and reassess their familiarity with the environment. The Louisiana State University School of Art has invited Ms. Hayes to come to Baton Rouge and create a unique, new, installation in our downtown exhibition space. We want to give the community an opportunity to discover something fresh about our city as seen through the eyes of this accomplished artist.
Rachel Hayes is an artist who has been steadily garnering accolades and awards and gaining recognition in the contemporary art world for her fresh, innovative works. For this art exhibition, Rachel Hayes will work with LSU Sculpture students to create a site specific installation in the Glassell Gallery. Ms. Hayes will be a visiting artist at LSU for two weeks in February, during which time the artist will meet with students and delegate installation tasks, work in studios with the students, install the exhibition and meet with the public during a gallery talk and opening reception on March 7th from 5-8PM in the Glassell Gallery. This interactive approach will be a rare opportunity for the students to experience the process from beginning to end of a large scale installation project. It will be an invaluable experience for the whole community.

Wrapping, draping and tailoring architecture, Rachel Hayes uses environmental light, shadow, egress and access to define, color and alter our perception of interior and exterior space. For many of her site-specific works, this Brooklyn, New York-based artist chooses unabashedly synthetic materials for their ability to pop and glow with unnatural color, texture and sheen.

Within her latest installation, however, Hayes bears down upon these surfaces with a surprisingly natural found object: rocks pulled from her parent's local property. In a deft gesture, Hayes makes these unwieldy objects yield to her repertoire of materials by painting them and thus transforming them into abstract and weighty dark matter. The translucent and shiny vinyl and plastic, pulled taught and caught beneath objects foreign to her plastic world, moves her installation into a tantalizing and exciting new direction.

Eric Sall: “High and Wide”
at Acuna-Hansen
Eric Sall’s first solo show in Los Angeles puts just three
of his large-format abstract oil paintings on display, but
since one is a masterpiece, the choice to exhibit quality
rather than quantity is a winning decision. Thick, house-
paint sized horizontal swaths ofcolor—from marine
blue at the bottom of the canvas, rising into grey, black,
then grey again and red at the top—form the back-
ground of Fair and Balanced.It is a color scheme that
brings Yves Tanguy’s fantastical landscapes to mind, es-
pecially the black in the middle, which functions as an
amorphous horizon line. The foreground is completely
centered on a contraption of vaguely military con-
trivance. This represented object, both fanciful and me-
chanical, appears like one of Tanguy’s polymorphous
blobs, but enlarged and more machine-like, like a Jean
Tinguely sculpture in two dimensional oils.
Adding another layer of depth to the picture as a whole
is the red, white and blue smears of bunting that form a
sort of hull, holding the parts in place. To use Fox News’
notoriously misleading slogan as a title for an ostensibly
abstract painting while we’re all in the middle of the po-
litical season could be construed as providing shorthand
for the grasping of meaning in front of the work. But it
actually opens up the art historical references and aes-
thetic experiences available when in front of the workto
include the more quotidian, rational mind. Has the con-
traption been attacked, or is it in the process of shooting
things out and attacking something else? The pinks and
purples used to create the lines and designs within the
thing contribute to a subtle statement about the colors
that go into red, white and blue when they are bleeding
into each other: primary colors politicized as masculine
and patriotic confront shades typically gendered as femi-
nine and assailable. Fair and Balancedexcites thought
while providing visual pleasure.
While Paul Klee described his artistic process as “taking
a line for a walk,”in Stockpile, Sall takes his lines for
short, jaunty excursions and layers them on top of each
other. Jagged zigzags march beneath soft curves and
inchworm silhouettes traverse stunted branchings and
pliable fishhooks. Bloody Ridgeblends his enchantment
with the line into roaring dissonances of unexpected
colors that clash on either side of each highlighted
edge. With Sall’s considerable skills manipulating paint,
the maturation of his ideas should be
keenly anticipated.
